In the News: What We’re Reading on 340B in Illinois

Large tax-exempt hospitals are generating significant profits from the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program, yet growing evidence shows those dollars are not benefiting the patients it was designed to support.

An opinion article by Community Access National Network President & CEO Jen Laws argues that 340B hospitals in Illinois are funneling billions of 340B dollars into offshore accounts.

It’s why Illinois lawmakers should reject legislation that expands the program and instead demand transparency to ensure it benefits patients as intended.

Hospitals stash billions overseas – and want Illinois to expand their drug discounts

Crain’s Chicago Business | By Jen Laws | April 29, 2026

...

Illinois policymakers considering House Bill 2371 should stop and ask a critical question: Why are we expanding a program that’s allowing hospitals to funnel billions of dollars away from patients, and even away from our country, into offshore accounts?

...

These are supposed to be charitable hospitals, benefitting from special drug discounts, yet they’re operating like hedge fund managers, holding billions of dollars well beyond Illinois’ borders.

...

Illinois lawmakers should not expand a program that enriches hospitals already flush with cash while patients drown in medical debt.
